Under the guidance and mentoring of Tom White Dings Crusaders ran a successful junior section in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1969 Tom White was junior secretary whilst Joe Rogers, who coached the juniors, was senior’s team secretary.
After losing their first three games, the juniors came up with four victories in a row (Ashley Down 35-0, St Bernadettes 14-11, Saracens 15-0 and Stokes Croft 15-0). In November the Bristol Evening Post reported that “there are encouraging reports of the improved play of many individual players, and teamwork as a whole.” In addition to many well-known local Combination clubs, Dings also played against the likes of Eagle House Youth Club, Nautical School and Stokes Croft Old Boys. The playing record for the season was: played 20, won 8, drew 1, lost 11.
In 1970 club officials felt that Dings juniors had a good chance of pulling off the end-of-season Junior Combination Sevens title, but received a major blow to that ambition with a motor-cycle injury to Nigel Creese. He had been the junior’s outstanding forward that season and also a key player in the Sevens team, but he fractured a kneecap in the accident in March.
Subscriptions for the Junior XV in 1969 were: Seniors and Under 17s - 1/6d. Schoolboys 1 shilling. Jerseys cost 40 shillings (£2) each, stockings 10 shillings (50p), club ties £1 and Club blazer badges £2.
